Jeremy Schilling’s work explores the intersections of humanity, environment, and emotion
through various mediums, with a particular focus on themes of exploration and connection.
Below are insights into several of his ongoing series and his artistic journey.
In his series, “The Overview Effect,” Schilling delves into the world of astronauts and space
travel. He examines the concept of the space suit as a shield between the individual and their
environment. Using oil paint, watercolors, and mixed media, these emotionally charged images
evoke feelings of homesickness, acceptance of change, and the loneliness that often
accompanies exploration.
Schilling’s charcoal and graphite works represent a selection from over 2,000 drawings,
paintings, and mixed media pieces created since mid-2020. This collection emphasizes the
physicality of charcoal and graphite, highlighting the spontaneous decision-making that occurs
in response to a live model's pose. Each drawing serves as a fleeting conversation—a question
posed by the model and a response articulated through composition and mark-making. Working
from life allows Schilling to capture the essence of the moment, transforming each piece into a
journal of significant decisions. This process reveals a unique honesty inherent in the act of
observation.
In contrast, his figurative oil and mixed media works aim to create visual narratives through the
selection of a single word. Schilling strives to embody that word in the texture and color of the
paint, bridging the internal thoughts of the figures with their physical presence. Through the
exploration of facial features, he investigates the senses and our navigation of the world.
Schilling’s landscape oil paintings serve as the backbone of his artistic practice, representing
both the longest-explored subject matter and the foundation for his other bodies of work. In
these recent landscapes, he focuses on the intersection of humanity and nature, capturing
specific moments from the day that illustrate the convergence of the maintained and the wild.
These works reflect his deep appreciation for the natural world while examining the delicate
balance between human influence and the inherent beauty of untamed environments.
Schilling’s work has been featured in various prominent venues, including Claire Carino
Contemporary in Boston's SoWa District, The Wickford Arts Association Gallery, and Mystic Arts
Center Gallery, as well as at the Wickford and Scituate Art Festivals and the RISD Craft
Exhibition. He has held solo exhibitions at Claire Carino Contemporary in Boston, MA (2018),
Counter Weight Brewing Company in Hamden, CT (2018), Perkatory Coffee Roasters in
Middletown, CT (2019), and AS220’s Main Project Space in Providence, RI (2019). He has also
exhibited annually at the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative since 2020.
Notably, in July 2019, Schilling’s work was part of a month-long display at the Waterfire Arts
Center, coinciding with Luke Jerram’s “Museum of the Moon” and John Sabraw’s “The Milky
Way.” This exhibition celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo Moon landing, in partnership
with Brown University and the NASA RI Space Consortium.
Most recently, Jeremy’s work has been accepted into the National Juried Exhibition at the
Copley Society for June 2025. In July 2025, his work was part of a duo exhibition at Erase
Gallery in downtown Providence, RI with his partner Adrienne Wooster. The 2025 year rounded
out with an exhibit in Ithaca, NY at Mix Art Gallery on the downtown Commons.
Growing up in Connecticut, Schilling received training as a landscape painter before attending
the Rhode Island School of Design, where he studied Illustration. His diverse experiences
inform his artistic practice and continue to inspire his exploration of the human experience
through art.
